“The Last Supper” by Chinese artist Zeng Fanzhi broke auction records this month when it sold for US$23.3 million at Sotheby’s Hong Kong. The estimate for this 2001 oil painting, from the collection of Guy and Myriam Ullens, had been upwards of HK$80 million (US$10.3 million). Amid cheering in the saleroom, a telephone buyer put in the final bid – the most ever paid at auction for a work by an Asian contemporary artist. “The Last Supper” was one of 62 works offered at the evening sale of Asian contemporary and modern art that earned a total of HK$1.13 billion, according to Sotheby’s.
